And father and son, in lieu of a pleasant greeting after long separation, began to deal each other heavy blows on ribs, back, and chest, now retreating and looking at each other, now attacking afresh...This said, in honor of Taraz Bulba you have to collect 144 Archangels, as flutists for his weddig.
Author: Karl K (Timonium, USA), 03-11-2024 23:40 Like City Defense Challenge - Blaze of Obscurity I played this map as part of the "Coming Home" campaign, on 200% difficulty.
Cool things in this map:
* It’s really fun to have so many starting towns and have to choose where and when to buy heroes and buildings and units. Which town needs the most help? Which has the best opportunities? And so on.
* I like how the five starting heroes lets you play the early game five times at once, kind of like playing five bingo cards is more interesting.
* Finding a prisoner with Water Walk is a fascinating reward, unlocking new areas of the map.
* Even though the heroes are still locked to level 15 like the rest of the campaign, you get super powerful due to the artifacts, which is a cool way to make it feel like the finale of a campaign. It's also more fun than being powerful just from having lots of creatures or really high stats.
There's a unique challenge in this map in the late midgame: you can't lose one particular city and there is a one-way gate for the enemy to come through and wreck it. I didn't have Town Portal available which I think is planned. They did warn you that city has to stand at the beginning, but you can't just leave your best army sitting in your castle all day. I had to do a lot of strategies to get back to my city with a hero that could win:
- Dropping off my armies and purposely losing a battle so I could retreat to my tavern
- Finding a Tome of Earth and Rocklands to cast Town Portal so it would be Expert level
- Mixing up Dimension Door and Admiral's Hat for quick island hopping
- I even had ChatGPT write me a little program with the gate entrances and exits so I could find the shortest distance home.
Even though it felt a little unfair at first, and I had to replay some turns, mostly the timing of the attacks was just right for game challenge. It came when I'd just gotten Dimension Door, so instead of the map suddenly becoming easy like often happens at that point, I was suddenly scrambling across the map for defense and striking back to find and control the gate entrance. And then there were other gates feeding onto that continent, so clearing it out once didn't make me safe forever. Good design.
Other comments:
* Messages tell you to look for gold mines in the south, so I sailed all the way to the bottom of the map and didn't find Cangor until almost the final month.
* I’m not sure what I think about the random squares full of deadly pirates. You’re supposed to be saving and reloading those, right? Not just randomly losing heroes and their whole armies? I like the interesting surprise fights, but only the ones that happen to be balanced to my character are interesting. Unlike the main gameplay loop where I pick my battles.
* It would have been more fun to collect angels one at a time across the whole playthrough than to have two late quests give them all to you at once.

Happy to see you enjoyed the map somehow, even it could not pose a threat to your skills. By the way, I make also maps for RoE. If the competition here at Blaze of Obscurity seems low for you guys, I challenge you to try my old RoE map - Wisdom and Rhyme on maps4heroesd.com You will be surprised how thought it can be without the proper tactics developed in order to win. Try it :) Thanks and Enjoy!
Author: Landslide (France), 29-11-2016 18:18 Interesting could have more potentiel - Blaze of Obscurity Took out the last AI hero in month 4 without yet having one ArchAngel so do not understand idea with that condition. What is the purpose of the second level? Neither I nor the AI ever got into it before win. Perhaps a third AI should be placed there.

Glad to see people find it easy, Landslide. If you wish more competition make sure you play the map on 200% and even more, add from the map editor several diminishing resources events for green player in the end of the first weeks. That would raise the difficulty sensible and you will be able to find how the second map level fits in. Cheers!
