Okay, I assumed wrong. Thought it was invisible event ambush. Found it and completed the map.
One more thing. I never reached the areas behind brown border gates and yet I finished the map. Was this intended?

Yes, you can decide not to attack Tenochtitlan and just go for the gold mines, the city won't do anything. That way you can explore the gold valley and return with the grail.
