Black Isle is a large map designed for the Horn of the Abyss expansion. It features three factions, including the latest Factory faction, and supports 8 players (3 humans and 5 computers). Inspired by the Fiery Riches scenario, this map incorporates unique concepts and a specially designed arena that offers a new gameplay experience.
Author: Tobias (Berlin, Germany), 18-01-2025 12:59 Good Map but no earth magic in the university - Black Isle Thank you for the map.
I couldnt finish it yet.
When i start with Dungeon there is no earth magic available through the first sea university. I checked the editor and earth magic should be enabled but for some reason it doesnt show up. Maybe its because of the recent update?
Without earth magic available this is very hard, i had to get labetha(starts with earth magic) pretty late in the game when all the power boxes were allready taken by my main hero.
Also in the dungeon underground you cant reach the dragon caves, even with fly. Is summon boat required here?
If so that would suck. I hate it when a map limits the player in such a way.
Despite all that i have fun playing it, just cant beat it yet.

Thanks for the feedback.
Magics are banned on this map, those that give a unique interest at the same time. But each magic is accessible, and constitutes one of the first important steps of this map. In the end on this map it is clear while on others chance can lead to defeats that are ultimately more frustrating.
For the underground, yes it is accessible. Have you tried a summoning boat?
Good journey! ;)
Author: wasilix, 07-12-2024 11:18 Like Review and playthrough - Black Isle Hi!
Finished the map on 3-4-1 as dungeon. The complete playthrough is now on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL02MwI3vxw6nl0sbY_clnNnCd4WUyzB4h
It was a great experience, and some of the fights against enemy heroes were pretty challenging (despite even berserk being available), which is very much welcome! Not sure if the same would be true if the game took extra several months. Enemy armies grow quite a bit, it probably might have been still challenging.
Played it on impossible and finished on the 1st try, but I use the editor quite a lot, so it can't really be compared to others who play blindly. Pulling off a win on this map blindly on 1st try would be extremely difficult because both time and space are fairly tight. Props to everyone trying :)
Some things I liked on this map:
1. Secondary currency (peasants) allowing to purchase all sorts of units. I was only buying my native units though (for minos primarily), but there are options to switch to, especially after you get more peasant dwellings or some joiners in the underground.
2. Diplomacy is available, but very limited, yet can be useful. I didn't utilize it much (tried a bit in the beginning), but there are some nice units you could join. Makes sense to take it on a secondary hero.
3. Magic skills and spells are limited initially. That's one of my favorite things about maps and I appreciate people making maps like this. No slow, no blind, no berserk at first. A bit of a regret for me is that resurrection is available fairly early (for dungeon even earlier, others require lvl 4 guild), and also that berserk is available - it's my least favorite spell. Well, at least I got to use it 1st time in a while :) Although as I said the late game enemies are still pretty tough. I had a couple of fights barely won.
4. A lot of navigation options - many portals (2-way which I appreciate!), opens up endless ways of building logistical chains. I think, this is a great map candidate for speed running. Later on also DD, Fly and TP are available which also adds appeal for speed running.
5. Decently tough start. Without estates it's not easy to keep expanding and developing the town, requires decent amount of hero management at first to achieve good results. Love this.
6. Another recent trend that I think is great - ingrained variation in difficulty. Some more peasant dwellings and quests are available on lower difficulties, and peasant dwellings are basically extra units of whatever-you-prefer-kind. I think it's a nice idea.
Some things I would've prefered to be improved:
1. Alternative ways to gain magic skills in mid-late game. Right now there is only 1 one-time quest for each skill and some chance of rolling them in naval academies (subject to heavy random). Then there are 3 pandora boxes available around month 3-4 (2 of which in potentially contested territory) at the earliest which grant all skills. It limits development options for heroes a bit too much, I think. Would prefer to have a repeatable option, even if expensive, in the mid to late game to make multiple heroes proficient in earth and air for map control, or making naval academies skills fixed.
2. I didn't find skull helmet anywhere, and my only guess was that it's only to be purchased via an artifact merchant. Perhaps I missed it because number of quests for it is extremely high, but if my guess is correct I think it needs to be fixed and at least 1 should be made available to enable access to the red tent. In my game I used the fact the overworld tents are accessible via DD, which I think shouldn't be the case, but at the same time accessing underworld tents shouldn't be a matter of luck and time.
Playthrough note:
The map had Air magic enabled (no longer the case) and I willingly took it to boost magic damage in the beginning. It helped somewhat in the beginning, and obviously it was very useful later on when I gained DD.
It's a great map, thanks for sharing it! Had some nice time playing it!

That said, even though I did try to play fast I still see how it can be improved, and even then there are definitely ways for improvement that I don't see. Wouldn't be too much surprised if someone can finish your map in under a month :) Expect at least to be doable in under 2 months.
Would love to watch such a speedrun video or step-by-step write up of your map :)
Once again, thanks for your map! It's been a lot of fun to play!

Author: wasilix, 28-11-2024 11:31 Like Some possible exploits with dd/fly - Black Isle Hi!
I noticed that if you get DD soon enough it's possible to go and kill red and blue invaders before they are ever released (they seem to be pretty easy to kill at that point). Also it opens up red and blue tents without having to go through the intended route where the player would have to hand in the artefacts gathered from these heroes leaving the player with the armor of the damned in possession.
I managed to clear the overworld and get DD+Fly on Beatrice by 3-2-1. Pretty sure that a better player with experience in speed running could do that a month or so earlier.
It's not a big deal for me personally, just wanted to let you know. I think it is welcome to make it possible to reach those heroes earlier having these fights before they get stat boosts (rewarding fast play is nice), but it would be appropriate to tightly close those 2 tents by player-specific gates, so that the player still had to go to the top right underground.
Also a couple minor things. I think these are intended, but just to be sure - areas behind fire wall scroll requirement are accessible via DD from tan's islands making it possible to access all 4 areas even though there is just one scroll. It's very minor and possibly intended, but who knows.
Anyway, thanks for the map. It's a lot of fun to play, and has some very nice ideas. I'll write up a review later when I finish it and upload the playthrough to youtube.

THANKS - Black Isle
Bravo!
Yes the exploits were anticipated and wanted, even if you make me worry about the speed that the best players can have. You reached the DD at 3-2-1, thanks for the info.
Yes, for the Air skill it was indeed a mistake and this one is corrected. Yes DD open exploit. Maybe exploit DD for Blue and Red tents shall be forbid. I am still very attached to exploits so it will remain as long as I do not find one + difficult to find.
I tried to make this card by integrating multiple solutions to succeed. Is it true that you started with the underground? In this case, I am very happy because in my games I never start there.
Thanks for the like, for the future review and for the future youtube video!

Thanks for the reply :) Not sure what you mean by starting with the underground. If you mean Dungeon then yes. If you mean going to the underground (i.e., underworld level) then I don't think I descended there for at least a month, maybe even 2.
Author: wasilix, 26-11-2024 18:02 Like - - Black Isle Hi there!
It looks like a pretty good map so far. It's hard to judge the balance based on what people write here because I barely played 3 weeks of time and didn't see anything yet, but I definitely like the concept a lot.
@gr0mph Can you please explain your point about Estates? You mention having Estates on every secondary hero (as early as day 1). However, I don't see any guaranteed way to get it other than via a university in a faraway land that is definitely nowhere near available on day 1 (even if you count the day of hiring a secondary hero as day 1).
It is a bit confusing, one other potential source is the naval academy which can offer estates (but also this chance isn't particularly high because it's just 2 slots for 6-8 skills IIRC). This one would be available on day 1, but is a subject to random.
So the question is what did you mean? I'm playing without estates (I wish I had them in the naval, but alas). Money is short but seems manageable. Maybe you meant that other university and misspoke the day 1 thing meaning as soon as possible to use that. I'm confused :)
Anyway, thanks for the map. I will upload my game to YT later. So far I'm fairly happy with my 1st 3 weeks.

Thanks for the feedback - Black Isle
Hi,
Thanks for playing Black Isle and thanks for your comment,
(v1.2.1) Estate, via Seafaring Academy, and a few map restarts, it was made pretty easy to get Estate for alts heroes early in the game. Then, you just had to keep a alt next to a tavern in the water. And once a week, you gain 1/2 hero with troops and the Estate alt. Restarting is also useful to get a major relic/artifact via Shipwreck survivor (but not mandatory).
(v1.2.2) However, Estate helps but is not mandatory to win the game. In the next version, I removed this way of playing because it is redundant and not mandatory. The Seafaring Academy has been changed to be exclusive between them (for example: the Dungeon can have Fire and Earth magic, the Cove can have Water magic and the Factory can have Air magic).
Have a great journey on Black Isle.

Thank you for the reply.
I'm playing the most recent version probably, downloaded it maybe a week or two ago. Estates is definitely very helpful to have (with seafarer academy). I decided not to roll too many restarts, after just a few I seemed to have a decent start, but I didn't have any attempts with estates rolled. Also opted out of taking the artefact simply to lower requirements for a decent roll :) Money is also pretty useful in low economy.
Besides, while estates is very nice to have, it's still a relatively slow skill in general (takes 7 days to gain value). On your map though it would be quite a bit cheaper than otherwise: it would work pretty well to hire a hero without skills (at least a few available), purchase basic skill and then use battle academy and free secondary skill level up to get to expert. Making it a 2k investment to get 1k after a few days. Not counting the hero cost because you need to be hiring them anyway.
Anyway, I did just fine without it even on impossible. I'm around 6 weeks in and I think the game is in the pocket already. Overall pretty happy with the tempo, but I'm not very good with, so the bar is not very high for me :)
I like your take on peasants. Had a good laugh when found the quest trading demons for peasants (in editor). That's hilarious how the tables turned on them :D In general, it's pretty cool to have a separate currency.
PS: I don't know why everyone posting here played the Dungeon, but they baited me to do the same :D I'm sheep following the flock :D

Author: AkatsukiTheDragon (Polska), 07-11-2024 21:18 Cool map, but... - Black Isle Hey I play this map for the 4th time as Dungeon. I play on the easiest difficulty, however I still struggle with beating it. Where do I start. How should I use necromancy skill when my main hero should have slots for earth magic etc. Secondary hero should use the undead cloak instead to prodouce skeletons for seer to exchange for peasants? I just think that it is not worth it overall.
Also why is water walk so good in this map? It is almost not usable. When I start map should I focus on eliminating all weak enemies or focus on rescuing lady hero that opens Gates for archangels? Also which u its I should stack? Dragons or normal units from castle?
In the end I had to cheat to look how to get dimensional door and fly.
I mean map is very enjoyable, but it is a chore to guess which seer does what, maybe some hints like some texts from npc should help to know where to go.

Thanks for the feedback and some advice - Black Isle
Hello,
Thanks for your feedback and I'll take it into account for future versions.
I'm very happy to have feedback on the difficulty you chose, and here are some tips,
1. Whatever the difficulty chosen, the rescuing lady hero is clearly a very important and very useful passage, the heroine gives easier access to the archangels (allows you to keep your army during the fights), and to the overpowering admiral hat artifact (which will protect your hero from almost everything like in the maps: the devil is in the detail or fiery riches).
2. Protecting the castles seems like almost impossible missions, no worries save your main hero and reach with a substantial army (trolls will do the trick) the castle in the underground (this one will rarely be attacked in any case at least at the beginning).
3. Whatever the difficulty chosen, the passage in the arenas under the Factory castle is crucial (pathfinding and logistic, and fast creature works if you want to avoid fights at first), access to powerful spells will help for difficult fights.
4. From the beginning of the game from Pawn to Queen, you can transform 25 peasants into 25 bears (an effective creature to protect your ranged creatures).
5. If you get a Ladybird of luck via a blackmarket, you can break the game in easy from the beginning by converting the 24 skeletons into 25 steel golems (speed at 6) and/or 25 peasants into 25 trolls. A troll army is very very strong!
6. The skeleton dragons are very very strong and especially from the difficulty from Pawn to Queen, they can transform into even stronger dragons!!!
7. Transforming your hero into a necromancer is strong, in one fight you can win a tide of skeletons that you can then transform into... sharpshooter for example?
Finally I did not retest in easy on the last download, and I noticed some errors on my map. Really want to replay a game in this difficulty. Yes I planned to put messages in the Seer's hut and also in Rumors. eventually when I have really finished the map. What do you mean by npc?
Once again thank you for your feedback and good luck
note:on easy difficulty there are a lot of winks between life and death. it is the map of fiery riches the starting point with the crazy reward with the pendant of life and the pendant of death. i wanted to put from the beginning the possibility of transforming skeletons into peasants. the implementation of the difficulty scale was perfect because as it was too powerful on impossible difficulty it would have broken the challenge but on easy the map must be fun.

Thank you for your comments, here are some tips - Black Isle
Hello 32167,
Thank you for your feedback on the Black Isle map. I appreciate your attempt and I'm here to help clarify the principles of the map and provide you with tips on how to be successful, especially when playing with the Dungeon faction.
1. Principles of the Map
The Black Isle map is designed to provide a challenging and strategic experience. The first stages may seem difficult, but the intention is to push players to think creatively and make the most of limited resources. Here are the main principles behind the design:
Exploration and Seer's Hut Quests: The map requires careful exploration to find key artifacts, creature dwellings, and important spells. Effectively managing your movements with multiple heroes is crucial to building a strong army.
Strategic Combat: The enemies you face are powerful, and you will need to use tactics and terrain to your advantage. For example, the Ring of the Magi is highly recommended against the Blue player, and the Armageddon's Blade will help you survive against the Red player. Avoiding and engaging in battles with a well-thought-out strategy is essential. The Admiral's Hat is essential for escaping from overly strong heroes.
Secondary Hero Development: The Estates secondary skill should be acquired from the start of the game (it's best to restart the game if the skill is not taken on day 1). Focus on acquiring useful spells (4 essential spells are in the arena, and the Resurrection spell is in each starter castle) and improving primary skills that benefit your victory. The Scholar skill will allow your main hero to learn spells, otherwise, a secondary hero can also be the one to learn them.
Main Hero Development: Although recruiting your imprisoned main hero is not mandatory, it will greatly simplify the situation. It is highly recommended to have Earth and Fire Magic; 3 Seer's Huts in the sea provide these magic skills and also 3 powerful spells (including Berserk).
2. Steps to Succeed with Dungeon Faction
To help you succeed with the Dungeon faction, here are some specific steps and strategies:
Initial Exploration:
Avoid the swampy area to the south at the start. Although it's not a trap, the teal hero is trapped there and will defend well. The swamp is not ideal for the Dungeon faction, but it becomes a valuable haven later in the game.
Use secondary heroes to explore the sea and take advantage of the taverns to waste your opponents' time and collect resources (don't forget the Estates skill).
Initial Seer's Hut Quests:
A Seer's Hut next to the castle offers you quests. If these are completed in less than 4 weeks, you can continue the game. Otherwise, it's better to restart. For Dungeon, you will be able to recruit Fairy Dragons, collect the Crown of Dragontooth and Dragon Scale Armor artifacts, and gain at least 1 dragon from the Pandora Box.
Mid-Game Exploration and Building:
Collect the best artifacts, with the first powerful sword being offered similarly to the Fiery Riches map.
Prioritize building structures that increase your resource income and allow you to recruit more powerful units.
Once you have a substantial army, prepare to go to the heart of the island in the underground. You will encounter strong but beatable dragons, so reload your saves to ensure your army is coherent and sufficient to take the castle.
This castle is a haven of peace before the Red Army arrives, giving you time to develop. Free the main hero, collect key artifacts, learn the best spells (Slow, Blind, Clone from the arena, Berserk from Seer's Hut, Fly from Scholar), and acquire the best skills (Seer's Hut at sea).
Mid and End Game:
Increase your army by taking back your favorite castle on the first day of every week with the Admiral's Hat.
Prevent your opponent from collecting powerful artifacts by taking the Tower castle using the Admiral's Hat and the Flight spell on the first day of each month.
Mass-recruit neutral creatures at sea with Satyrs, in the swamps with Fangarms, or with the Seer's Hut.
By following these strategies and focusing on effective exploration, resource management, and tactical combat (flight or fight), you should be able to overcome the challenges presented by the Black Isle map. I hope these tips help you enjoy the map and succeed in your future attempts.
Thanks again for your comments, and please share any other thoughts or questions you may have.
Best regards,

:) - Black Isle
How will the Ring of the Magi help me in the battle with blue if he needs only two rounds to destroy all my army? He has 123 level 7 monsters, and I only have 15; for the rest of the monsters the ratio is even worse for me...
His attack and defense are 42/43, mine are 24/15. He has logistics (I haven't found a way to get the logistics and the pathfinding), tactics, all magic skills, WW etc. And I have not one such enemies, but three! And a month later six more will be added.
And all this on a map of size L, where there is no more land than a map of size S. I can’t imagine how to run and hide from this whole company and at the same time replenish my army?!?
My opinion is that the map requires significant balancing and is completely unpassable at this moment. And I'm sure that after balancing it will be a great map.

THANKS - Black Isle
THANKS,
I'm updating the map. Based on your feedback, the following changes will be made:
* A university will be added, allowing you to acquire secondary skills such as Estate, Logistics, Pathfinding, and Tactics.
* A new Seer's Hut will grant the Air skill and an extremely powerful Air spell.
* A mage hut will be placed near each player's castles, and mage eyes will help players immediately identify key points on the map.
* The power of the red and blue heroes, especially Giselle and Zydar, has been reduced.
* I've found a simple way to make the main hero more robust from the start if the player chooses to keep him throughout the game.
Additionally, I've made some other modifications:
* Fixed an issue to prevent unexpected behavior and to stop the red hero from entering the underground plane.
* The player's underground exit has been made more elegant.
* Dungeon players can now mass recruit Harpy Hags and Medusa Queens.
I plan to finish the updates by the end of Friday. Thank you very much for your constructive feedback.
