It's a very unique map in that the random portal jumps make all of your positions vulnerable at all times. There's also a lot of RNG chance since the artifact placements and random towns have a huge impact on this map. The 4 starting spots are well-balanced since the RNG is a much bigger factor.
Never made it to the Tempest Nexus on all 4 playthroughs. Due to the portals, it's not safe to send your main hero into the treasure area unless you've got powerful secondary heroes. And if your secondary heroes are strong enough to hold down the fort, then the game is won anyway.
In my four playthroughs, the AI made it into that area one time, and I took that opportunity to invade that AI's territories right away.
Overall a great map, TP is available but you'll never get it unless you go into the Nexus...
