I think newer generations of the HD+ alters the terrain in a way that the Black Wizard do not get stuck in the garrison. Same happened to me also...
I got through this by restarting the map in HD mod, playing for 4-5 turns and turning back to HD+. If everything works correctly, you should get sulfur instead of gems from the Naga Bank north of Kozia. You can also do a quick check with cheats to go to the aforementioned garrison to see if Black Wizard stops at the correct place.

Not sure what you mean by "essentials" here. The map was finished by many people and is considered one of classic h3 maps. It's not supposed to be easy (albeit it's not very difficult). There are certain h3 bugs that may make the game behave differently for different people (even game breaking), but as far as I can tell its author went leaps and bounds to avoid issues of this sort. However, given that this map is aeons old and was made long before HD mod was created, there are some potential issues, but it's not necessarily the problem of this map.
Definitely not a waste of time to play, because it introduces players to many interesting ideas even if they don't end up finishing the map.

Ok, right, maybe I was too emotional, sorry ; I meant situation with Baatan City and Arch Devils ; I don't know why and how, but I recruited less of them than other players (I'm comparing with some walkthroughs that I checked). Recruitment is possible only in first week, then numbers are in minus. Subsequently, having not enough Arch Devils, I was not so effective in battles => step by step I lost my army and finally ice elementals on cursed ground was the last enemy I could reach. I went back few months to Baatan City and to green. And I found out a loophole in the map scenario, that enables me to get as many Arch Devils as I want (theoretically). It only takes time and patience. Of course, NO CHEATS, only playing games with green. And now is the other problem - I suppose, now play will be too easy ...

This is my 3rd try.
On 1st try, I greedily went around the Wisdom Scholar, intending to get it after I have Expert Wisdom and ideally also all other skills at Expert, or at least after taking that Witch Hut :P in case it was giving the same Skill as the Scholar. Later it took me a while to find where I missed Town Portal.
On 2nd try I did my best to hire Peasants every week and to end each week in town after getting the Legs of Legion, even if it meant delaying my progress by a lot. When I finally decided to use Admiral's Hat, I discovered that the guy in the second Inferno already hired a good Horde of my Archdevils, so I restarted. I mean, those were my Archdevils, not his.
This time, I delayed only when I didn't have enough Peasants, Imps and Halberds to use the full potential of the next stack of Pit Lords. Also threw some Peasants off the Ship once I got Admiral's Hat in order to go faster, because I had enough of the long distances. Ended on 14-2-7 with the Grail, but there's no point comparing to the speedrun due to my Admiral's Hat abuse.
To compare anyway, I took the town that produces Marksmen and Dem... err... Halberds on 5-1-5, so 1 week later than MrArtemidius, and then I wandered around the map for some 1,5 month collecting the stuff I skipped while waiting for Halberds and Peasants to grow (because there were Pit Lords ahead). Later, right before the town that produces Archdevils I also waited some 1,5 month, because there was a big stack of Pit Lords shortly before that and I just couldn't let their farming potential go to waste. And obviously I went back and forth a little bit to change army composition to avoid losses before and after I got the Admiral's Hat.
I think something like early to mid month 10 finish might be doable if someone plays like MrArtemidius but decides to abuse the Admiral's Hat. By the way, your army compositions and mana plans for the long walks with many battles were impressive.
The story, battles and riddles were nice and it's great that we have an English version now.

If I remember correctly, at the beginning of the game you needed to choose particular towns as it was in scenario description to avoid any weekly creatures. Then you can continue without downloading extra plugins.
You may restart the scenario, or you can just use cheat to get Archangels tp get past the fight, and then delete them after. You will get zero score but whatever. It's not about the destination, but journey.

@Kone you'll have to tweak movement bonuses in heroes files to pass through. Check my response to LOBDO for the Wayfarer map outlining roughly how it can be done (at the moment it's 2nd from top). If you don't have movement artifacts, I think you can still change bonus given by stables the same way.

I loved the linear journey design. The challenge was good and not too hard, it is good thing because usually chinese maps are too difficult for my taste, the story events give you enough hints so you don't need to look for solutions often (there was only very few times I had to check how to beat particular fights, and never needed to check where to progress next). The story was brilliant and well written as well as the lore behind location objects. I am glad that it was English translated, I didn't expect such quality story from Heroes 3 map. I enjoyed its characters, funny jokes and silly moments. Some side activities are fun and breath of fresh air (though some areas are missable if you did some quests wrong). Small number of artifacts was good thing because we dont get overwhelmed and each piece feels more significant.
-There was few issues with the map though, I think two main issues were backtracking requirement and weekly town event. Some fights require lots backtracking that can require many days if wanted minimal losses, perhaps author could add additional garrisons or mines near such fights to save time, or additional towns to reduce distance to Town Portal. Also, I think limiting weekly creatures can be too harsh because if there are huge casualties, the later fight becomes quite harder (thinking about some dragon fights). Another consequences of limiting weekly creatures is that you have to click the event prompt every week which can be frustrating since the map will last many months to complete.
Overall it is the best challenge map I have completed. The end of story indicates that there would be sequel, not sure if it exists but would love to continue to play more Ira's story. Or if there is similar kind of maps existing, I will gladly take recommendations. The closest one that resembles this map that I have completed so far is Fiery Phoenixe's "To Kill for a Power".

Additional comment - Ira the Mage
I read through old comments and find it interesting about neat solutuons I wasn't aware about. For example, the 30 azure dragon fight was such painful without the trick. I remember reading a clue about this trick in early game, perhaps it should have been hinted again before the battle. I did this by visiting a fountain to double the manas, using efreet, haste, and spamming force field + armageddon for the next +60 rounds. I got extremely lucky and did not lose to fear RNG, only casualties were 12 cerberosses as early cannon fodder. Another thing was about the dragon garrisons that I did as regular fights; suffered heavy casualties by losing all my Halberdies... had to use Imps as my power melee stacks after that until very end lol. Also not sure if unintended, but enemy Inferno left me 16 Archdevils to recruit immediately after capturing his town, those helped so much.
Some general tips for those who may struggle: Read the events and hints completely. Minimize losses by having right kind of army each fight - sometimes it is better to leave some troops behind than bring all them to fight. Keep your Marksmen alive at all costs. If some battle seems impossible, check if it is about terrain by turning HD+ off from the HD Launcher (rare case, I can only remember 2 fights where this was necessary). If you get some sort of error while picking some artefacts, try to end the turn and pick it next day (happened to me 2 times). Finished the map in late 25th month.

I checked some gameplays and at the point, where I am right now, everyone had at least 500 marksmen but I got 189 because of this. I am now by the Galthran with ABs. I even had to waste like 5 months to even get to this number of marksmen.
PS: I know, the Galthran fight is not really about the number of marksmen but it was rly frustrating dealing with the 3K earth elementals before getting to this point.
Any solution to the recruiting problem? Thanks in advance!

SOD SP by Rose Kavalier is a great HD mod plugin for playing original SOD maps. I think, it gives 1-10 speed options with 10 being instant or nearly instant.

What I don't like, however, are maps that border on the impossible, especially if they are advertised with the exact claim of not being about decisive battles or unbeatable odds where at one point you have no way of reaching the map's goal. I don't know how many times I've started this map over because I lost the one monster I needed to proceed or open one of the countless quest guards. Maybe this map takes a different player than me or I haven't figured out how to play it properly, but ultimately it is double frustrating: not only because it's extremely hard to make progress but also because the claim of it being more about the story and less about decisive battles simply is not true.

I'd argue that this map is actually mostly true to the claim its author makes. Perhaps, you haven't seen many other Chinese maps, and fights in this one are a cakewalk in comparison to some of the other ones. Most of the fights, although maybe not all, aren't reliant on random, which is great, and makes them actually not bordering on impossible. Fights here require you to figure out a strategy to beat them without having to get a few lucky rolls of morale or such.
As a rule of thumb, you don't want to be losing any troops, at least those that you can't replenish.

It's the only event in Inferno town.

I have the same issue, and I've been playing SoD with HD+ and SoD_SP, and I've got the same issue. For some reason I have these numbers (8 and 4), which I thought is actually intended amount, because I saw this sort of thing in other SoD maps. AI behaviour though is weird too (I'm stuck on a green border puzzle because AI doesn't want to stop on an antimagic borderguard).
I'm 100% sure, that I play SoD, but I have both HoTA and SoD installed in the same directory. I always believed, that they don't break each other.
