I recently replayed it as Purple (Dungeon), making sure to capture the nearby Dragon Cave (and building the Portal of Summoning) as early as possible. This worked well, and I finished the map on 7-2-2.
It seems to me that some players have a huge advantage - for example, Blue (Tower) starts in an isolated area, where he can develop in peace for a very long time, while the other players are squabbling over every inch of the land. Red (Inferno) is probably fine too, thanks to the Castle Gate, because Town Portal is hard to obtain; once you do, you have basically won. Purple (Dungeon) worked for me, but only thanks to the Dragon Cave. The rest of the players are just screwed, imho.
Neither me nor the AI bothered capturing the neutral towns locked behind the monoliths/whirlpools. The resources are scarce, and Logistics is essential (Pathfinding helps too).
Overall, I enjoyed the map, but with half the map left unexplored it kinda feels half-baked.

I think I'm getting too old, big maps without town portal tend to just get boring after a certain point. It's fine at the start but they need it further in maybe guarded by a tough fight.
Basically once my main army/hero can autobattle any enemy hero and win with pretty much no losses, it should be quick to clean up.
In this game I've spent weeks retaking cities because they come from all directions and they're just too strong for secondary hero/army to beat and my main hero is 4-5 turns away.
Fun at first, interesting challenge, but eventually it's just annoying.
I saw tents and portals to try to make it so you have a way to get to cities faster, but being old I'm not good at memorizing where portals go etc. so I stopped playing month 6 owning 10 cities and going 2 months in circles without any enemy heroes that were as strong as me.
Played as Castle, switched main to Aiolos (+2 speed) by the end I got rid of all but his 45 Arch Angels and used clone for easy fights.
Thanks again!

There is a town portal spell in the map, i found the tome of earth magic hidden behind a hillfort.

Wife and I play all new MP maps. Have played most of the old ones too. First thing we do is go into editor and ensure town portal is turned on.
I removed some commom features, like townportal, fly and dimension door so that there would be a strategic challenge in defending the cities, and to preserve the "ways" of the map with it's portals, whirlpools and labirints.
Although, there are ways to get these spells, like Duke of Valois just said, there is a earth magic tome in the south of subterran, and some other spells in the dragon kingdom (subterran center), and a flying boot, near paradise city.
